Mixed Media

"Guardian"

Paper Mache

Created for Flowstate III: Haunt and Hues, "Guardian," is made entirely out of recycled materials including cardboard, newspaper, iridescent tinsel, and fabric scraps.

Inspired by the various meanings and purposes behind mask-making, this mask was created with the intention of warding off negativity.

"Burned Out"

Mixed Media

"Burned Out" was created out of an electrical socket that caught fire from a broken vacuum prong.

Using an old frame, scrap wood, and hardware, the piece was built into the frame. Power tools were used, minimal injuries were sustained.

The piece reflects on creative and emotional burnout, emphasizing distress and fragmentation.

"Cat Mask"

Paper Mache

Created for a friend, this was Alexandra's first mask-making attempt.

Mediums include: cardboard, fabric scraps, paper, cotton balls, guitar strings, paint, and hot glue.

Jellyfish

Lighted Sculpture

Created entirely from thrifted and scrap materials, this was Alexandra's first experiment with lighted sculpture. Equipped with color changing LED lights, the lighting creates an effect that resembles jellyfish movement.

Proper weight distribution and a combination of different materials allows the piece to sway gently with air movement, such as a fan or a breeze through the window - further emphasizing the natural movement of jellyfish tendrils.

"Seeking Enlightenment"

Mixed Media Painting

"Seeking Enlightenment" started as a challenge to create as accurate of a self-portrait as possible.

The piece was set aside for over a year, and upon returning, additions were made - transforming the piece from a self portrait into an artwork reflecting on the journey of self-acceptance and recognizing self-worth that often feels difficult in one's youth.

Mediums include: paper, cardboard, keys, and scrapbooking materials.

This style of mixed media is one of Alexandra's most favored, combining a love of painting with three-dimensional objects to tell a story.

(The lace is painted by hand.)

  • What inspires you to create three dimensional artwork?

While painting is a soothing and meditative practice for me, creating three-dimensional artwork offers a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. I have always enjoyed working with tools and learning how things we use in our everyday life are constructed.

Creating something that has 3D shape also allows me to expand my skillsets as a human, beyond art, and practice being resourceful.

  • Where do you source your materials?

Many of the materials used in my mixed media pieces are sourced from thrift stores and garage sales. Many of them are simply household items that have broken (like the outlet in "Burned Out"), or are scrap materials from other projects I have created.

*There is a fine line between collecting art supplies and hoarding, and I certainly walk it.

  • How do I accquire a mixed-media piece of my own?

At this time, very few of my mixed media pieces are available. You can inquire about specific pieces or request a commission (click the button below, or refer to the "Contact" page).
